33 Saxon Street – Balam Balam Place

OVERVIEW

33 Saxon Street is a well-known and much-loved community and creative space in the heart of Brunswick, Melbourne. In 2024, the site underwent significant redevelopment, including replacement of some of the existing buildings to provide welcoming and affordable spaces for creatives, artists and the Brunswick community. With a budget of about $30 million, Balam Balam Place at 33 Saxon Street is one of the largest single capital investments ever undertaken by Merri-bek Council.

CHALLENGE

Hart (formerly Correct Safety) was engaged design and installed a “passive” height safety system across the sawtooth roof at 33 Saxon Street. A passive solution was specifically requested by Merri-bek City Council’s maintenance department, to eliminate fall risks caused by user-error or inexperience.

SOLUTION

The finished system includes a custom stairway over the steep roof and level walkways with guardrails, enabling maintenance personnel to perform their duties with the maximum level of safety and convenience. As no user input is required to use the system, fall risks caused by user-error or inexperience have been eliminated.

Our user-friendly roof safety system includes:

  • Custom Hart stairway
  • 2x non-slip, levelled aluminium walkways with guardrail along the fall edge
  • 1x non-slip aluminium walkway between the roof access hatch and cage ladder
  • Vertical cage ladder
  • Internal fold down ladder and roof access hatch
  • Access ladders
  • Fall arrest anchor points
