Capital Student Stays is a newly built student accommodation complex in the heart of Mawson Lakes. With 11 retail stores and a supermarket on the ground floor, the complex provides students with everything they need to live and learn in Adelaide’s northern suburbs.
Hart was engaged to design and construct a plant platform, roof access system and HVAC screen. Heavy equipment was slated for installation in a concentrated area of the platform to suit the requirements of the mechanical contractor. This meant the platform needed to be engineered to handle significantly higher point loads in that zone, while still meeting standard loading requirements across the rest of the roof area.
We designed an aluminum platform which was majority 2.5 kPa, but custom-engineered and reinforced to 5kPa in the zone where higher loads were expected. Using aluminum and beefing up only specific sections meant the platform was overall lighter and more cost-effective than an equivalent steel platform.
The complete solution provides reliable support for roof-mounted plant, straightforward access for maintenance crews, and complete concealment of mechanical equipment.
